Spearfish sits at the mouth of a limestone canyon on one side and an interstate gateway to the Black Hills on the other. Neither one shows up on a census table, but both show up in how local premiums get priced.

Close to Sturgis, but Not the Epicenter

What it doesn't absorb is the crash and theft data that piles up in Sturgis and Rapid City themselves, where the rally actually sets up. Spearfish drivers feel the traffic without carrying the same rate load as the cities hosting it.
A University Town That Skews Older
Black Hills State University sits about a mile off I-90 at exit 12, and it adds a real student population to Spearfish's streets each fall. What it hasn't done is push the city's median age down the way a university usually does — Spearfish's median age runs close to 40, older than plenty of South Dakota cities without a college at all.
The relocation boom driving Spearfish's population growth has outpaced the university's own enrollment gains, so the city's driver pool looks more like a retirement and family destination than a classic college town.
