More than 20%. That's how much Otsego's population has grown since the 2020 Census — from 19,966 residents to an estimated 24,500-plus today. No other city in Wright County, Minnesota's fastest-growing county, comes close to that pace.

Car insurance in Otsego runs an estimated $1,195 a year for full coverage, comfortably below Minnesota's $2,414 statewide average. That gap tracks with a median household income north of $110,000, but the growth itself — and the retail and road projects it's pulling in — is the bigger story for anyone driving here right now.

Wright County's First Costco Is Coming

Costco broke ground on a roughly 160,000-square-foot warehouse at 60th Street NE and MacIver Avenue NE, right next to the I-94 interchange. It's the first Costco in Wright County and the 13th in Minnesota, complete with a members-only fuel station.

The company is targeting an August 14, 2026 opening. For a city this size, a destination retailer like Costco doesn't just add one store — it adds trip volume from well outside Otsego's own population, all funneling through the same interchange.

Four Roundabouts, One Interchange

Wright County is rebuilding the CR 137/I-94 interchange to handle that traffic, replacing the old ramp configuration with four roundabouts in a roughly $5.8 million project. MnDOT is coordinating the work with its separate I-94 Albertville-to-Monticello project, so this isn't an isolated fix — it's one piece of a longer corridor plan.

MacIver Avenue NE closes to through traffic for stretches of the build, with final restoration work expected to run from roughly August through October 2026 — landing right around the same window as the Costco opening.

What a Policy Costs in Otsego Today

Aggregator data puts full coverage in Otsego at roughly $1,195 a year for a driver with a clean record — well under the $2,414 Minnesota averages statewide for full coverage, and even lighter against bare-minimum liability drivers elsewhere in the state.

  • Confirm your garaging ZIP code: Otsego splits across 55330 and 55374.
  • No insurer publishes an Otsego-only rate table: treat the $1,195 figure as a benchmark, not a quote.
  • Expect lane closures near MacIver Avenue NE: through roughly August–October 2026.
  • Raise UM/UIM above the 25/50 floor if you can: about 1 in 9 Minnesota drivers carries no insurance.

Growth Doesn't Wait for the Roads

Otsego's jump from 19,966 to roughly 24,500 residents didn't happen because of one project — it's new subdivisions, new commuters, and now a flagship retailer, all landing at once. That kind of compressed growth tends to put more cars onto roads that were sized for a smaller town, at least until projects like the CR 137 interchange catch up.

A roundabout-heavy interchange redesign is meant to help with exactly that — roundabouts generally produce fewer severe crashes than signaled intersections, even as they handle more total vehicles. For now, though, construction season itself is the thing to drive carefully around.

Covering More Than the Minimum

Minnesota's 30/60/10 liability floor, $40,000 PIP requirement, and 25/50 UM/UIM minimum apply in Otsego exactly as they do everywhere else in the state. With premiums already running below average here, bumping UM/UIM coverage up from the state floor is one of the cheaper upgrades a local driver can make.

The Minnesota Department of Commerce regulates every carrier writing policies in Otsego and fields complaints if a quoted rate doesn't hold up after binding. See our Minnesota car insurance guide for the full statewide rules on PIP and liability limits.

Otsego added a fifth of its population in five years and is about to add Wright County's first Costco on top of that. The interchange rebuild is the city catching up to its own growth — worth knowing before you're sitting in a lane closure on MacIver Avenue this summer.
