Roughly 25,600 people call Easton home, and not one of them can catch a train out of it. Car insurance in Easton has to account for that: the last passenger train through North Easton left the station in 1958, and the depot building has been the Easton Historical Society’s headquarters for decades. Everywhere else in Massachusetts a commuter might weigh a monthly T pass against driving. In Easton, that math never comes up.

The statewide rules still apply in full — 25/50/30 liability, mandatory PIP, a no-fault claims system — but a town built entirely around local roads puts more daily miles on more cars than a rail-connected suburb would.

Easton Auto Insurance at a Glance

  • State average full coverage: ~$2,429/yr
  • Population: roughly 25,600
  • Villages: North Easton (02356) and South Easton (02375)

A Town Built on Shovels, Not Highways

Easton’s identity runs through the Ames family, whose North Easton shovel works grew so large by 1879 that it reportedly supplied something like 60% of the world’s shovels — tools that followed the 1848 California gold rush and plenty of construction booms after it. The stone shops the Ames family built, along with a Richardson-designed town hall and library, still anchor North Easton village; the old factory complex was converted into apartments in 2013.

That same family later donated the land that became Borderland State Park, shared with neighboring Sharon, centered on a 20-room stone mansion finished in 1910. None of it shows up on an insurance quote directly, but it explains why North Easton still looks and drives like a 19th-century mill village rather than a modern commuter suburb.

What Every Easton Policy Still Has to Carry

History aside, the legal floor doesn’t bend for geography. Every Easton policy needs at least 25/50/30 liability — $25,000 in bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 per accident, $30,000 for property damage — plus mandatory $8,000 Personal Injury Protection and 25/50 uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, neither of which can be waived off.

Massachusetts runs no-fault, so that PIP pays a driver’s own medical bills and lost wages first after a crash, no matter who caused it. See our Massachusetts car insurance guide for how the rest of the no-fault system and the state’s credit-score ban fit together.

No Train Since 1958 Means Everyone Drives

North Easton station closed to passengers when the branch line north of Stoughton was cut in 1958. The depot now belongs to the Easton Historical Society, and the only path back is a proposed stop under the MBTA’s South Coast Rail Phase 2 — still unfunded, still years out. Until then, a car is the only way in or out of town.

That falls hardest on Stonehill College’s 2,400-plus students and staff, who reach the 384-acre campus almost entirely by car via Route 24’s Exit 31B and Route 123. Move-in weekends, home games, and shift changes all funnel through that same interchange, adding predictable local volume on top of everyday commuter traffic.

Two Villages, Two ZIP Codes

Easton splits into North Easton (02356), home to the old shovel works and Stonehill College, and South Easton (02375), the town’s southern village closer to the Brockton line. Insurers can and do rate by ZIP code, and the two halves see slightly different traffic patterns, but neither one carries a special surcharge or discount built into state law.

  • Bordering towns: Brockton, Stoughton, Taunton, and Raynham all touch Easton’s town line.
  • No interstate interchange: Route 24 runs along the town’s edge rather than through its center.
  • Trade-off: ZIP code shifts a quote at the margins; driving record and vehicle choice still decide the bulk of it.

Next Step for Easton Drivers

Confirm a policy meets the 25/50/30 minimum plus the mandatory $8,000 PIP and 25/50 UM/UIM, then shop a few quotes against both the North Easton and South Easton ZIP codes. A town with no rail alternative puts a premium on getting the coverage right the first time — our guide to lowering your premium covers the levers worth pulling first.
